"Hanami" is the centuries-old custom of picnicking under

a blooming cherry blossom tree (sometimes known as sakura). Originally limited

to the elite of the Imperial Court (circa 710–794) but soon spread to Samurai Society

and then to the common  people, by the Edo period. Under the sakura trees,

people had lunch and drank sake in cheerful feasts.
